When we think of November 11, many people immediately think of the start of the carnival season. But that is not the only special thing about this day.

November 11 is also St. Martin’s Day, which is associated with many customs that we mostly remember from our childhood.

In honor of St. Martin, who shared his coat with a poor beggar, lantern parades are held throughout Austria, which are particularly popular with children. In the weeks leading up to the parade, schools and kindergartens put a lot of effort into making all kinds of lanterns. As soon as darkness falls on November 11, these are carried through villages and towns accompanied by traditional songs to thank St. Martin for his many good deeds.

The “goose dinner” is also a tradition that is revived every year around this time. But why a goose? According to legend, St. Martin was appointed bishop against his will in 371. However, as he did not feel up to the task, he hid in a goose stall. However, the cackling of the geese drew attention to him and he was able to be consecrated bishop. This is the reason why we still celebrate St. Martin’s Day today with a St. Martin’s goose.
